I just read the first book in Rick Riordan’s epic series; “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” Although the book was geared towards a younger crowd, I really enjoyed it. It was easy and quick to read, but still entertaining.
This book belongs in the fantasy genre and draws heavily on Greek mythology.In Percy Jackson’s world Gods and Goddesses are real, and still rule the world. Occasionally these deities take up with humans and produce children. These ‘half-bloods’ are in danger from mythical monsters and beasts and can find refuge at Camp Half-Blood. Percy Jackson is one such half-blood who makes his way to the camp. While there he is given a quest; if he fails it could very well mean the end of civilization as we know it.
This book is very appropriate for late-elementary/middle school age kids all the way through adulthood. There is a small amount of violence, but it isn’t excessive or detailed. However, there is a scene that occurs in the Underworld that may prompt questions from children regarding the afterlife, so be prepared for that possibility.
This book was well written and entertaining. It didn’t draw me in quite as much as the ‘Harry Potter’ series does, but is a fun read nonetheless.
